The 2007 BMW Z4 3.0i is a two-seat roadster from the first-generation Z4 (E85), shown here in its facelifted form. It is powered by BMW’s 3.0-litre N52 inline-six, rated at 215 hp and 185 lb-ft in this application, and drives the rear wheels. Where it sits
The Z4 range was revised for the 2006 model year with fresher styling and new engines. The 3.0i became the entry roadster, while the 3.0si used a higher-output 255 hp version of the same engine and the Z4 M Roadster sat at the top. A fixed-roof Z4 Coupe was also launched, but only in 3.0si and M forms, so the 3.0i is strictly a soft-top roadster. The 2007 model year was the second of three for the facelifted car.
What it is like
The 3.0i combines a smooth, naturally aspirated six with a fabric roof, run-flat tyres and electrically assisted steering. It is less frantic than the 3.0si but still quick and enjoyable, and the lighter, simpler specification suits relaxed open-air driving.
Buying one today
Commonly reported issues include faults with the electric power-steering column and the convertible-top mechanism, cooling-system parts such as the electric water pump and thermostat, and oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets. All E85 Z4s were built in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
