ABOUT THE 2007 BMW X3 3.0SI

The 2007 BMW X3 3.0si is the facelifted version of the first-generation (E83) compact SUV. It is powered by the 3.0-litre N52 inline-six rated at 260 hp and 225 lb-ft, with xDrive all-wheel drive. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also offered.

Facelift and new engine

2007 brought the X3’s mid-life update. The 3.0si replaced the earlier 2.5i and 3.0i models, bringing the N52 engine and a jump in output. The facelift also introduced revised bumpers, headlights and tail lights, plus an improved interior with better-quality materials, addressing a common criticism of early cars. A six-speed automatic replaced the previous five-speed. The X3 continued to be built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria.

Practicality

The X3 offers a high driving position, a sizeable boot and folding rear seats in a compact footprint. It drives with more agility than most SUVs of its size, though the ride is firm.

Known weak points include failure of the xDrive transfer case actuator, N52 oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets, and electric water pump failures. Check for worn suspension components and that the panoramic sunroof drains are clear.

Rivals

The X3 3.0si competed with the Acura RDX, Lexus RX 350 and Infiniti FX35.
