ABOUT THE 2007 BMW 328CI CONVERTIBLE

The 2007 BMW 328i Convertible (listed here as the 328ci) is the open version of the fifth-generation 3 Series, coded E93. It has a 3.0-litre N52 inline-six producing 230 hp and 200 lb-ft, driving the rear wheels. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual was also offered.

The first folding hard-top 3 Series

The E93 arrived for 2007 and broke with tradition by replacing the fabric roof with a three-piece retractable steel hard top. With the roof raised it is quieter and more secure than earlier 3 Series convertibles; lowered, it folds electrically into the boot. The body and interior are distinct from the saloon, sharing their style with the E92 coupe.

Practicality

It is a genuine four-seater, though rear space is tighter than in the saloon. The folding roof takes up a large share of the boot when stowed, so luggage space varies greatly depending on roof position. The hard top also adds noticeable weight compared with the coupe.

Known weak points

Typical N52 issues include oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks and electric water pump failures. On the convertible, check that the roof operates smoothly and that its sensors, seals and hydraulics are healthy, as repairs can be costly.

Rivals

Competitors included the Volvo C70, which also used a folding hard top, the Audi A4 Cabriolet and the Mercedes-Benz CLK350 Cabriolet.
