ABOUT THE 2006 BMW Z4 M ROADSTER
The 2006 BMW Z4 M Roadster is the M division’s version of the first-generation Z4 (E85), launched for the 2006 model year. It uses the 3.2-litre S54 inline-six from the E46 M3, rated at 330 hp and 262 lb-ft in US form, and drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, the only transmission offered.
A new top model
The Z4 M arrived alongside the facelifted Z4 range and sat above the 3.0si as the fastest version. Unlike the regular cars, it used hydraulic rather than electric power steering, plus a variable M differential lock, larger brakes taken from the M3, and deeper front bumper intakes. Its top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (249 km/h). A fixed-roof Z4 M Coupe followed for 2007.
What it is like
The S54 is a high-revving naturally aspirated engine that delivers its peak power near its redline, giving the car a very different character from the turbocharged sports cars that followed. The ride is firm and the short wheelbase makes it lively on uneven roads, so it rewards a skilled driver.
Buying one today
Known S54 weak points include connecting-rod bearing wear, which many owners address with preventive replacement, plus VANOS system issues and the cost of the engine’s specialist maintenance. Check service records carefully, look for clutch wear, and make sure the soft top operates smoothly.
Rivals
The Z4 M competed with the Porsche Boxster S, Honda S2000 and Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG.
