ABOUT THE 2005 BMW 530I
The 2005 BMW 530i is a rear-wheel-drive saloon from the fifth-generation 5 Series (E60), in its second US model year. It is powered by the 3.0-litre M54 inline-six, rated at 225 hp and 214 lb-ft. This entry covers the version with the six-speed automatic; a six-speed manual and the SMG sequential manual gearbox were also available.
The last M54 530i
2005 was the final year in which the 530i used the M54 engine. For 2006, BMW replaced it with the new N52 six-cylinder, raising power to 255 hp, and introduced all-wheel-drive xi versions of the saloon. A 2005 530i is therefore one of the last E60s with the older, well-proven engine, which many owners see as simpler to maintain than its successor. It sat between the 525i and the V8-powered 545i in the range.
Technology and comfort
The E60 introduced a lot of new technology to the 5 Series, including the iDrive controller, an aluminium front structure to reduce weight, and options such as Active Steering, a head-up display and adaptive headlights. Run-flat tyres were standard. Inside there is good space for four adults and a sizeable boot.
Buying one today
Weak points include the crankcase ventilation (CCV) system, oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks, cooling-system parts and the complex electronics. Run-flat tyres can make the ride firm and are expensive to replace.
