ABOUT THE 2000 BMW M COUPE
The 2000 BMW M Coupe is the fixed-roof, high-performance version of the Z3 (E36/8), a two-seat sports car with a distinctive “shooting brake” hatchback shape. In US specification it uses the S52 3.2-litre inline-six, rated at 240 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, the only transmission offered.
Where 2000 fits
The M Coupe arrived in the US for the 1999 model year as a companion to the M Roadster. The 2000 car is one of the S52-engined models; during the 2001 model year BMW switched to the 315 hp S54 engine from the E46 M3, so the 1999 and 2000 cars represent the original US version. Like all Z3 models, the M Coupe was built at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
What it is like
The M Coupe’s roof makes the body considerably stiffer than the roadster, which sharpens its handling. It rides on the Z3’s short 2,459 mm wheelbase and uses a limited-slip differential, giving a lively, communicative driving experience. Buying one today
Low production volumes have made good examples sought after. Known weak points include cracking around the rear subframe mounting points, cooling-system failures typical of BMWs of the era (water pump, radiator and expansion tank), and worn suspension bushes. Rust and accident history should also be checked.
