ABOUT THE 2000 BMW 750IL/750IL PROTECTION

The 2000 BMW 750iL is the flagship of the third-generation 7 Series (E38), a long-wheelbase luxury saloon powered by the M73 5.4-litre V12. The engine is rated at 322 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque and drives the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. The 750iL Protection was a factory-armoured version designed to resist ballistic attack, with reinforced glass and body protection.

Where 2000 fits

The E38 750iL was sold in North America from the 1995 model year, succeeding the E32 750iL. The 7 Series received a mild facelift for 1999, so the 2000 car has the updated headlights and detailing. It was one of the final years before the E65 generation took over for 2002, with a V12 760Li following later.

What it is like

The 750iL rides on a 3,070 mm wheelbase, giving limousine-like rear legroom. The V12 is exceptionally smooth and quiet, and the car came with a very high level of standard equipment, including self-levelling rear suspension and luxury rear-seat features. The Protection model’s extra weight affects acceleration and handling, but it was designed for security first.

Buying one today

A V12 7 Series demands a careful approach. Commonly reported issues include cooling-system failures, ignition coil and fuel pump problems, oil leaks, and faults in the self-levelling suspension. Electrical problems such as instrument cluster pixel failures are common to all E38s. With two banks of components, many repairs cost roughly twice as much as on the V8.

Rivals

The 750iL competed with the Mercedes-Benz S500, the Lexus LS 400 and the Jaguar XJ range, including the long-wheelbase Vanden Plas.
