ABOUT THE 2020 AUDI S5 SPORTBACK
The 2020 Audi S5 Sportback is the high-performance version of the second-generation A5 Sportback (B9), a five-door liftback with a coupe-like roofline. It is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 producing 349 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm), sent to all four wheels through quattro all-wheel drive and an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic.
The 2020 update
For the 2020 model year the A5 family received its mid-life update. The S5 Sportback gained revised front and rear styling with a wider, flatter grille and new headlight designs. Inside, the biggest change was the infotainment: the rotary MMI controller on the centre console was dropped in favour of a 10.1-inch touchscreen. This makes the 2020 car the first S5 Sportback with the updated interior layout.
Practicality
The Sportback’s main advantage over the S5 Coupe is its rear doors and large hatchback opening, which make the boot far easier to load than a conventional saloon’s. Rear headroom is slightly reduced by the sloping roof compared with the S4 sedan, but the car remains a usable four-seater with room for a fifth on short journeys.
Buying one today
The 3.0 TFSI V6 is generally regarded as robust, but buyers should look for a documented service history, check for coolant leaks and confirm that the many electronic systems work correctly. Brakes and performance tyres are a notable running cost on this heavier, more powerful model.
Rivals
Competitors included the BMW M340i, the BMW 440i Gran Coupe and the Mercedes-AMG C 43.
