ABOUT THE 2008 AUDI A4 CABRIOLET
The 2008 Audi A4 Cabriolet is the four-seat convertible from the A4 family, based on the B7-era platform with a fully lined, power-operated fabric roof. This entry covers the front-wheel-drive 2.0T, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder making 200 hp and 207 lb-ft (280 Nm), with the multitronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). A 3.2-litre V6 with quattro and the V8 S4 Cabriolet were also available.
Late in its life
For 2008 the A4 Cabriolet was near the end of its run; Audi replaced it with the A5 Cabriolet, so the 2008 model is one of the final soft-top A4s. The 2.0T was the most efficient way into the range and gave the car a relaxed character well suited to top-down cruising.
Practicality
The Cabriolet has two doors and four seats, and adults can sit in the rear for short trips. The fabric roof is well insulated for a soft top, although boot space shrinks noticeably compared with the saloon because of the roof stowage area.
Buying one today
Check the roof’s hydraulic system for leaks and slow operation, the condition of the fabric and rear window, and the drain channels, which can block and let water into the cabin. The multitronic CVT has a reputation for costly failures, so smooth operation and service history are important. The 2.0 TFSI engine’s known weak points are cam follower wear, carbon build-up on the intake valves and PCV valve failures.
Rivals
Competitors included the BMW 328i Convertible, Mercedes-Benz CLK 350 Cabriolet, Volvo C70 and Saab 9-3 Convertible.
